July 29th 2026 – The Ties That Bind – A Modern Parable

Scripture Reference:

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

The Story:

In a small village, there lived a woman who had just lost her young son. Overwhelmed with grief, she wandered the streets, searching for someone who could understand her sorrow. The weight of her loss felt unbearable, and she believed that no one could truly grasp the depth of her pain. Desperate for solace, she was directed to an old man known for his wisdom.

Upon meeting him, she poured out her heart, tears streaming down her face. The old man listened patiently and then offered her a strange request: “Bring me a handful of mustard seeds from a home that has never known loss.”

Hopeful yet confused, she set off on her mission. Her first stop was a cheerful house where a woman was baking. “I need mustard seeds from a home that hasn’t experienced loss,” she explained. The woman paused, her smile fading. “We buried my father last year,” she said softly.

Undeterred, the woman moved to the next house, where laughter and music filled the air. But as she made her request, the response was the same. “We lost our daughter,” the family replied. And so it went, from door to door, each household revealing their own heartbreak: a husband, a brother, a friend.

As the sun began to set, she returned to the old man, her hands empty of seeds but her heart fuller than when she had left. At first, she felt defeated, believing she had failed. But the real lesson unfolded in the moments between the doors.

With every knock, she discovered stories of loss intertwined with lives that seemed perfectly ordinary. The woman baking bread, the family dancing, the children playing — all appeared untroubled on the surface, yet each held scars that told a story of grief.

In that moment, she understood: her journey through the village was not just about her own sorrow but a shared human experience. The strangers she had encountered were not just faces in the crowd; they were hearts that had endured, just like hers.

As she sat with the old man once more, she realized that in seeking to find a home untouched by sorrow, she had unwittingly uncovered a deeper truth: every life, no matter how ordinary, holds stories of pain and resilience. The narrative of loss is not meant to divide us, but to unite us in compassion and understanding.

Reflection:

Remember that everyone carries burdens, often hidden from view. Your struggles may feel isolating, but they connect you to the collective human experience.

  • Look Beyond the Surface: When encountering impatience or indifference, consider the unseen struggles others may be facing.

In moments of sorrow, we often feel alone. Yet, it is in these moments that we can find profound connections with others. Embrace the truth that your grief, while personal, is part of a shared journey. Reach out, listen, and be a light for someone else navigating their shadows.

How can you reach out to someone today who might be carrying unseen burdens?

“Grief may feel like a solitary path, but every heart carries its own story, reminding us that we are never truly alone.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, In moments of profound sorrow, we come to You seeking comfort and understanding. We thank You for being our refuge in times of pain and for surrounding us with a community that shares our burdens. Help us to recognize that every person we encounter carries their own hidden struggles, and teach us to respond with compassion and kindness.

Lord, may our grief become a bridge that connects us to others, reminding us of our shared humanity. Grant us the strength to reach out, to listen, and to offer support to those in need. Let us be vessels of Your love, bringing light to those navigating the darkness of loss.

We ask for Your healing touch on our hearts and the hearts of those who mourn. May we find solace in Your presence and comfort in each other. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Invitation to Accept Jesus

If you feel a longing for peace, hope, and unconditional love, I invite you to open your heart to Jesus. He is always ready to welcome you, no matter where you are in your journey.

Here’s how you can begin:

  1. Acknowledge Your Need: Recognize that we all fall short and need His grace.

February 21st 2026 – If Heaven Had Visiting Hours

Scripture Reference:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

This is a repost from February 21st 2017 of a poem honoring my mom’s birthday after her passing in July of 2016. I pray you enjoy.

If Heaven Had Visiting Hours

If Heaven had visiting hours, I would clear my schedule today. I would leave my phone behind, along with all the other responsibilities that seem so important at times. I’d tell everyone not to worry, that I would be back soon. “I’m going to see my mom.”

I would pack a bag of things that you liked to eat, never forgetting your favorite sweet rolls. Also, a few things to show you that you’ve missed since you’ve been gone.

I would make my way up to Heaven to see you for the first time since last July. After reaching the gates at the entrance, I’d see you standing there, looking as beautiful as ever, your eyes clear and gleaming again, no more pain or sadness hiding in them. Your smile is bigger than ever before. All signs of illness are gone. Nothing remains but the look of complete happiness.
I’d hug you tight, never wanting to let go. It’s been too long since I’ve heard you say, “I love you.”

We’d sit on a bench much like the one at the park in front of that old car. We were at Trail Dust Town, where I took you last year on your birthday. I’d hold your hand and rest my head on your shoulder, much like we did that day – just you and I. I’d tell you stories and jokes to make you laugh, a sound I’ve missed more than you could ever know.

If Heaven had visiting hours, I’d tell you about it all. I’d tell you about the nights I’ve cried because I miss having you around. I’d tell you about the laughs our family has somehow been able to share. Life without you hasn’t been easy; I’m sure you’ve seen it all. However, there have been ups to go along with the downs.

After catching up on all the things that are happening at home, we could spend the rest of the afternoon doing all the things we used to do when you were still around. I would share with you that I’m still writing the Christian devotions every day, hoping that you have been able to continue to read them in Heaven.

When the day is over and it’s time for me to go, I’d be so sad to leave you. I’d remind you how much I love you and am trying to make you proud. I’d give you one more hug, not wanting to let go. But it would be OK because Heaven would still have visiting hours, and I could just come back again.

Happy Birthday! I love and miss you, Mom…

Conclusion:

In the midst of our grief, we find solace in the promise of eternal life. Just as the sun rises each day, so does our hope in the resurrection through Christ. Though we may feel the weight of loss, we can take comfort in knowing that our loved ones are at peace, embraced by God’s everlasting love.

As we remember their laughter, their warmth, and the moments we cherished, let us hold tightly to the assurance that we will one day be reunited. Until that glorious day, may we find strength in our faith, leaning on one another and trusting in God’s perfect plan. In our hearts, they remain alive, guiding us with their love and inspiring us to live fully, just as they would have wanted.

“In Christ, the promise of reunion shines brightly; though we may part for a season, our hearts will rejoice together again in the eternal embrace of love.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, In times of sorrow, we come before You with heavy hearts, seeking comfort and peace. We thank You for the gift of our loved ones, for the memories that bring both joy and pain. Help us to remember that though they are no longer with us in body, their spirit lives on in our hearts.

Grant us the strength to navigate our grief and the hope to look forward to the day we will be reunited. Surround us with Your love and support, and remind us of Your promise of eternal life. May we find solace in the knowledge that You hold our loved ones close, free from pain and filled with joy.

Guide us as we carry their legacy forward, cherishing each moment we shared. Help us to honor them by living fully and loving deeply, just as they taught us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
