The Mariage Test

Scripture Reference:

“Love is patient, love is kind… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7-8)

Reflection:

Have you ever had one of those days when your spouse irritated you? You still love them, but in that moment you may not have liked them very much. Every marriage experiences those moments. The question isn’t whether they come—it’s how we respond.

If we allow hurt, disappointment, or frustration to control our hearts, a small crack can slowly become a deep divide. Love is more than a feeling; it is a choice. When we choose to love, our feelings often follow.

Healthy marriages are built on unconditional love, not conditional love.

Conditional love says:

I’ll love you if you meet my expectations.

I’ll stay as long as things are easy.

I’ll forgive you only if you deserve it.

Unconditional love says:

I’ll love you even when you disappoint me.

I’ll stand beside you through every season.

I’ll forgive because Christ first forgave me.

None of us married a perfect person. We see each other’s flaws more clearly than anyone else. The question is, what do we do with that knowledge?

Ask yourself:

Do I accept my spouse’s weaknesses with grace?

Do I encourage them more than I criticize them?

Do I build them up or tear them down?

Do I speak respectfully about them, even when others are listening?

Do I withhold affection until they change?

If your love depends on your spouse becoming someone different, it has become conditional.

Great marriages aren’t built by winning every argument. They’re built by extending grace, offering forgiveness, showing respect, and choosing love—even when it’s difficult.

The world teaches us to walk away when relationships become hard. Christ teaches us to remain faithful.

When both husband and wife continually choose unconditional love, their marriage becomes a place of safety, healing, and lasting joy.

Keep Your Marriage Strong

Pray together every day.

Communicate honestly and keep no inappropriate secrets.

Forgive quickly and ask forgiveness when needed.

Look for ways to serve each other.

Encourage more than you criticize.

Keep Christ at the center of your marriage.

Never stop dating, laughing, and growing together.

A great marriage doesn’t happen by accident. It is built one loving choice at a time.

“A lasting marriage isn’t built by finding the perfect person, but by faithfully choosing to love the imperfect person God has entrusted to you—every single day.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of marriage. Today I recommit my heart to You and to my spouse. Help me to look beyond the little things and always see the person I first fell in love with. Strengthen our marriage as we build our lives upon the solid rock of Christ. Teach us to love each other with patience, grace, forgiveness, and unconditional love, just as You have loved us. Thank You for Your unfailing love and for sending Jesus to die on the cross so we could be saved. May our marriage always reflect Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
