July 13th 2026 – Could You Not Watch with Me One Hour?

Scripture Reference:

“Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter.” (Matthew 26:40)

Reflection:

In the quiet of Gethsemane, Jesus posed one of the most intimate questions He ever asked—”Could you not watch with me one hour?” This wasn’t a question for the crowd or for strangers; it was directed at those who had vowed never to leave Him.

As I reflect on this scene, my focus has shifted from the disciples’ failure to stay awake to the profound significance of Jesus’ return. He was aware of what lay ahead—He had already confided in them that His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. All He asked was for them to be present, to stay awake and watch with Him.

Imagine the weight of that moment. Jesus, in His deepest anguish, fell to His face, pleading with the Father for another way. When He returned to find His closest friends asleep, His response was not one of anger, but of grief. This is where we often miss the mark. Instead of judging the disciples for their absence, we should consider the loneliness that Jesus felt—carrying the weight of the world while those He loved were physically there but emotionally distant.

How many people in our lives are in their own Gethsemane right now? They may not be asking for solutions or answers; they may simply need us to sit with them in their pain. Can we be present without trying to fix things? Can we hold space for the heavy conversations, the moments that challenge our comfort?

Presence is a form of love that feels increasingly rare in our fast-paced world. We often show up for the celebrations and the highlights, but what about those moments that happen in the stillness of the night, when it’s inconvenient and we’d rather be anywhere else? Jesus is still asking today, “Could you not watch with me one hour?”

Every time someone reaches out in pain, every time a friend goes quiet and needs someone to notice—even when we feel tired or distracted—Jesus invites us to stay. The disciples may have failed to be present in that moment, yet Jesus still went to the cross for them. This is the essence of grace: it doesn’t demand perfect attendance or unwavering strength; it thrives in our imperfections and our willingness to show up.

Let us remember that grace allows room for failure, and love is found in our efforts to be present, even when we fall short. As we navigate our relationships, let’s strive to embody that same grace. When someone is in their moment of need, let us ask ourselves, “Could I not watch with them, even just for an hour?”

May we be the presence of Christ in the lives of others, and may we find strength in our shared vulnerability. For in those moments, we reflect the heart of Jesus—who asks us not for perfection, but simply for our presence.

“True love is found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of presence, where we simply sit with those in pain, reflecting the heart of Christ in our willingness to stay.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, In the stillness of Your presence, we come before You with humble hearts. Thank You for the gift of grace that allows us to be imperfect and yet still loved. Help us to be more like Jesus, who invites us to share in the burdens of others.

Open our eyes to those around us who are in their own Gethsemane, longing for someone to simply be present with them. Grant us the strength to sit in the discomfort of their pain without feeling the need to fix it. Teach us to listen, to hold space, and to reflect Your love in our actions.

May we find joy in being that comforting presence, even when it’s inconvenient. Remind us that our willingness to stay, even for an hour, can bring light to the darkest moments.

We ask for Your guidance as we strive to embody Your love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

November 30th 2025 – Encourage and Build Each Other Up

Scripture Reading:

“Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:10-11)

Reflection:

Imagine children on a sunny beach, working together to build a magnificent sandcastle. While some fervently create, others might come along to knock it down, especially if they’re siblings. This playful destruction often stems from a desire for a reaction. Sadly, this dynamic can also appear in schools, workplaces, and even churches, where minor differences—like preferences in worship music, food, or dress—become sources of contention. Such arguments can divert our focus from the true message of the Gospel.

“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.” (Romans 14:19)

Engaging in behavior meant to offend or provoke is contrary to the spirit of Christ. We must remember that God works in each of our lives at different paces and in unique ways. It’s easy to think, “I understand this, why don’t they?”—but such thoughts can stem from pride. In reality, other believers might grasp different aspects of faith more profoundly than we do. Each member of the church contributes to our collective growth, and we should embrace this diversity with humility.

When we serve in our communities without pride, we reflect Christ’s love. The church is a tapestry of individuals, each with distinct gifts, and no single person embodies the entirety of the church. If we genuinely commit to the teachings of Romans 14:19, we can transform our communities into places of encouragement and support.

“True strength in faith comes not from standing alone, but from lifting each other up, celebrating our differences, and building a community rooted in love and encouragement.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering love and grace, which sustain us each day. I am grateful for the beautiful diversity of gifts and talents within the body of Christ, which You have intricately woven together to reflect Your glory. Help us to recognize and celebrate these differences rather than let them divide us.

Lord, I ask for Your forgiveness for the times we have allowed pride and disagreements to create barriers among us. Teach us to approach each other with humility and compassion, always seeking to understand rather than judge. May we be quick to listen and slow to speak, fostering an environment where encouragement thrives.

Instill in us a deep desire to lift one another up, just as You have called us to do. Let our words be filled with grace and our actions be driven by love. Help us to be vessels of Your peace, reaching out to those who are struggling or feeling isolated within our communities.

Guide us in our service, reminding us that we are all part of one body, working together for Your kingdom. May our efforts reflect Your light in a world that often feels dark and divided. As we go about our day, open our eyes to opportunities to bless someone else, whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply by being present.

Thank You for the promise that we are never alone, and that together, we can build a stronger, more loving community. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

October 28th 2025 – Connected In Christ

Scripture Reading:

“I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me.” (2 Corinthians 2:5)

Reflection:

The church of Jesus Christ is not just a congregation; it is a family bound together by faith. This connection can run even deeper than the ties of blood. As believers, we are called to weep together over heartaches, rejoice together in victories, and share our lives intimately with one another. This is not an oddity but rather the beautiful design that God intended for His people.

“…so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” (Romans 12:5)

Imagine if I were to cut myself; you would undoubtedly feel that pain as if it were your own. In the same way, in the body of Christ, we are profoundly interconnected. When something good happens to you, I will be there to celebrate alongside you. Unfortunately, there are times when some Christians choose to sulk over the blessings of others instead of joining in the joy of celebration. This perspective robs them of one of the many joys that come from being part of the church.

Application:

Today, I encourage you to seek out ways to connect with other believers. If someone is struggling, be the one to walk alongside them, offering support and love. If they are experiencing joy, cheer them on wholeheartedly as they pursue Christ. Let us unite under the name of our Savior and cultivate fresh unity among all believers. Remember, when part of the body is hurt, we all feel that pain, and when one part is under attack, we stand firm beside them in solidarity.

“In the family of Christ, our joys and sorrows intertwine; when one of us rejoices, we all celebrate, and when one of us hurts, we all carry the pain, for we are beautifully and profoundly connected.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of Your church and the precious fellowship of believers that You have placed in my life. Help us to remain united in spirit and purpose, resisting the temptation to let petty issues create division among us. Grant me a heart that genuinely rejoices with others in their victories and is willing to mourn alongside them in their struggles. May I always seek to build up and encourage my fellow believers, reflecting the love of Christ in every interaction. Empower us to be a source of strength and comfort to one another, as we all strive to grow closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

October 4th 2025 – Intense Situations

“What I dreaded has come true.” (Job 3:24-25)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Life often presents us with intense situations, and the story of Job is a profound reminder of how to navigate through them. Job faced unimaginable loss and grief, questioning the very fabric of his existence. In his darkest hour, he lamented the reality of his suffering, feeling utterly abandoned. Yet, we see that even in such despair, Job’s story is not merely one of suffering but a journey toward understanding and faith.

In today’s world, where suffering can be amplified by social media and constant news cycles, it’s easy to fall into the trap of judgment. When we see others in pain, we may instinctively think they must have done something to deserve it, reflecting a more modern inclination toward a “karma” mindset rather than the grace-filled truth of the Gospel. However, Jesus challenges this perspective. In Luke 13, when asked about tragic events, He redirects the focus from others’ sins to our own hearts, urging us to examine our relationship with God.

As Christians, our response to intense situations—both our own and those of others—should be rooted in compassion, humility, and a commitment to support one another. We must resist the urge to judge and instead offer encouragement and love. Our role is not to point fingers but to extend hands in support, reminding each other of God’s unchanging goodness and grace.

When we encounter someone who is suffering, it’s crucial to remember that their pain does not equate to personal failure. We should approach them with empathy, offering a listening ear and a heart willing to share the love of Christ.

Let this devotion be a reminder that through our shared struggles, we can cultivate understanding and compassion, embodying the love of Christ in our actions and words.

“True strength emerges not from avoiding hardship, but from embracing it with a heart anchored in faith.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, In times of turmoil and heartache, I come before You with a humble heart, seeking Your wisdom and strength. Forgive me for the moments I have hastily judged others in their suffering, forgetting Your grace that covers us all. Help me to embrace a spirit of compassion, to see the pain of others through Your eyes, and to remember that suffering does not always stem from sin.

Guide me to be a source of comfort and encouragement to those in need, reminding them of Your unwavering love. In my own struggles, may I lean fully on You, trusting that You direct my paths, even when the road ahead seems daunting. Teach me to walk in faith, to uplift those around me, and to reflect Your light in the darkest of times.

May my heart be open to Your leading, and may I be a vessel of hope and healing in a world that desperately needs it. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
