“Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.” (Isaiah 41:10)
The Story:
Mara sat beneath the fluorescent lights, holding a paper cup of water with both hands. The doctor had ordered more tests, and every possible outcome seemed frightening.
Across from her, a little boy noticed the small cross around her neck.
“Are you scared?” he asked.
Mara nodded. “Yes. But I’m trying to trust Jesus.”
“Does that mean you’re not scared anymore?”
She smiled faintly. “No. It means I’m scared, but I’m not alone.”
The boy looked toward the hallway. “Is Jesus in the waiting room?”
Mara looked at the ordinary chairs, the quiet nurses, and the closed doors.
“Yes,” she said. “He is here—in the waiting, in the questions, and in whatever comes next.”
Mara still prayed for healing. She listened to her doctors, took her medicine, and allowed others to help her. But she no longer believed faith meant pretending everything was fine. Faith meant placing her fear into Jesus’ hands, one moment at a time.
When the test results finally came, the road ahead was still difficult. Yet Mara discovered that Christ had been carrying her through every step—not always by removing the sickness, but by giving her courage for today, peace in the uncertainty, and people who reflected His love.
Reflection:
Trusting Jesus when you are sick does not mean you will never feel afraid, discouraged, or tired. Faith is not pretending that pain does not exist; it is bringing your pain honestly to God and believing that He remains close. You can pray for healing while also receiving medical care, asking questions, resting, and allowing others to support you.
Sometimes Jesus brings healing through medicine, doctors, rest, and time. Sometimes He gives strength to endure a difficult season. Even when we do not understand why we are suffering, we can trust that our sickness does not separate us from His love. Christ is present in every examination, every restless night, every prayer, and every uncertain moment.
Take each day one step at a time. You do not need to have strength for everything that may happen tomorrow—God promises to meet you with grace today. Your circumstances may change, but Jesus remains faithful, and His presence can give you peace even in the middle of the storm.
“Even when sickness weakens my body and fear fills my heart, I will trust Jesus, knowing His love sustains me and His presence never leaves me.”
Prayer:
Jesus, meet us in our times of sickness, weakness, and uncertainty. When I am afraid, I will choose to place myself in Your loving care. Please bring healing and strength to my body, peace to my mind, and comfort to my heart. Give wisdom, patience, and compassion to my doctors and everyone caring for me. Help me follow the treatment I need and give me courage through each appointment, test, and difficult moment.
When I feel weak or discouraged, remind me that I am not alone. Help me trust You even when I do not understand what is happening. Surround me with people who will encourage and support me, and teach me to rest in Your unfailing love. Give me grace for today and hope for tomorrow. In every circumstance, help my faith grow and remind me that You are always near. In Your precious name, Amen.
