July 18th 2018 – Unity and Love

“Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!” (2 Corinthians 10:12)

Sometimes, we all are not going to get along. This is one of the realities of living among broken people. Even in the church, we will have different opinions about how or why things are done. In 2 Corinthians 10, we find the apostle Paul, who happens to be writing parts of the Bible, being criticized for his letters. Rather than celebrate the Words of Truth that Paul was sharing, some people took the opportunity to question Paul’s authority.

Now, imagine if all that energy used to bring Paul down was used to bring Paul and others up. How many more lives would have been changed because of that unity and love? God uses our bond of love as believers to minister to those outside the church. When the world sees people love each other without condition, they begin desiring that love. When the world sees people forgive one another, no matter the situation, they begin craving that forgiveness. This is the power of our unity as believers. When we love in the middle of our disagreements or misunderstandings, we shine a floodlight in the middle of a dark world.

“The more you love in the middle of the battle, the brighter you shine in the midst of a dark world.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for those You have placed around me. Help me to walk in unity with my family and my church. Fill me with Your love so that I can love others. Help me understand Your forgiveness so that I can better forgive others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

June 23rd 2017 – Quiet Time!!

“My beloved has gone to his garden, To the beds of spices, To feed his flock in the gardens, And to gather lilies.” (Song of Solomon 6:2)

Conflict is a part of life and because of that reality, we must be ready to learn from the disagreements we may have with others. One of the greatest ways to grow through conflict is to first take time alone and pray. Rather than acting out in anger in those first moments of an argument, stop and retreat to your corners. During those few moments, in a quiet place, spend time in prayer to the Lord. Don’t simply pray that your spouse, friend or child will realize the error of their ways, but pray for your own heart to be changed. Ask the hard questions of God, “Was there something I did wrong?” “How could I have responded better?” No matter the circumstance, we are all prone to mistake and should be honest in evaluating ourselves.

After those moments of prayer and reflection, we can stand under the grace of God realizing His love is still upon us through Christ. When we stand in that reality, we are then in a better place to extend that grace and love to the one whom we are conflicting with. This way of processing conflict can help us all to grow through an argument rather than allowing an argument hurt a relationship.

“When you are praying through conflict be open to correction, ready for instruction and grounded in grace.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank You for forgiving me when I have sinned against You. Help me to remember that grace so that I can be full of grace towards others who may hurt me. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I can be slow to speak and slow to become angry. Help me to grow closer to You through those times of tension and conflict. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
