Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (Kings 19:11-12)
In this passage, we see the great prophet Elijah being told by God to go to the mountain and wait there to hear from Him. Like us many times, Elijah was probably hoping for some supernatural move of God. God did do some of that: He sent a wind that shook a mountain, an earthquake, and a fire. Yet God’s voice was not in any of these.
Too often, we want the spectacular, but we miss out on the supernatural. The way that God speaks to us, the majority of the time, is through His still small voice. That voice is the voice of His precious Holy Spirit that lives within us. When we get ourselves quiet enough, we can hear Him giving us the direction that we need.
Jesus said in (John 10:27), “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
However, if we always look for a sign on the outside (like wind, fire, or an earthquake), we are going to miss the biggest moves of God in our lives. We need to remember that the Bible says in (John 4:24) that, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
I recently heard this song called, “Heart to Heart.” We can say that, with our Heavenly Father, it is spirit to Spirit. As it says in (Psalm 46:10) “Be still, and know that I am God” – So take some time today to be still and quiet and listen to what your Father is saying to you. I will tell you one thing, you will not be disappointed!
“Make the time to listen to His Gentle Voice”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Today, I make a decision to listen to the voice of Your Holy Spirit within me. I know that You want me to hear Your voice, Help me make the time to be still and quiet so that I can hear You. so starting Today, I open my heart to have a heart to heart with You Lord. In Jesus’ name Amen.
