“To the elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,” (1 Peter 1:1)
When we hear the word “exile,” it often conjures up images of distant lands and feelings of being out of place. In 1 Peter, Peter addresses the early church as “elect exiles,” reminding them—and us—that our true citizenship lies not in this world, but in Heaven. This concept of being an exile is a profound truth for all believers.
As followers of Christ, we are called to live as citizens of Heaven while navigating the challenges of earthly life. This world, with its trials and tribulations, is not our final destination. Just as a traveler might find joy in the beauty of the journey while knowing their true home awaits, we too can find peace in our temporary circumstances.
In Romans 12:2, we are reminded, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” This transformation is essential as we seek to reflect Christ in our daily lives. We are not to adopt the values of this world but to embrace the Kingdom of God, living in a way that honors Him and points others to His grace.
So, how do we live as citizens of Heaven while on Earth? We focus our hearts and minds on things above. Our time, talents, and treasures should be invested in what lasts for eternity—love, kindness, and sharing the Gospel. While enjoying the blessings of the earth, we must remain mindful that they are temporary. Our hope should be anchored in the eternal promise of life with God.
“Though we walk this earth, our hearts are set on Heaven.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of being citizens of Heaven. Help me to remember that this world is temporary and that my true home is with You. Grant me the strength to live a life that reflects Your light and love. May I invest my time and resources in ways that honor You and advance Your Kingdom. Today, I choose to live with eternity in my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
