“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
In the Gospel of John, we see John the Baptist’s disciples expressing concern that more people were flocking to Jesus for baptism. This scenario is not unique; it resonates throughout scripture. The human tendency to seek affirmation and status within the Christian community is a challenge we all encounter. The Apostle Paul addressed a similar issue with the Corinthian believers, who were mistakenly tying their identities to specific leaders rather than Christ.
“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:13)
The essence of spiritual growth lies in the willingness to diminish ourselves so that Christ may be magnified. John the Baptist rejoiced at the increasing prominence of Jesus, recognizing the fulfillment of his mission. Can we echo that sentiment in our lives? When a colleague receives a promotion, when we feel overlooked, or when our efforts seem to fade into the background, can we genuinely celebrate the success of others? Each day, we face challenges in our families, workplaces, schools, and even within our church communities. The core question remains: Are we ready to let Him increase while we decrease?
True joy is found in this surrender, and it allows the purity of Christ’s character to shine through us.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I seek recognition or exaltation. Help me to allow Your Spirit to transform my heart so that You may increase in every aspect of my life. I ask for forgiveness for my attitudes and any gossip I may have engaged in. I love You, Lord, and desire for others to see You reflected in my life. May Your presence radiate through me! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
