January 10th 2025 – Testing the Spirit

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.” (1 John 4:1-3)

In our journey of faith, we are often confronted with various teachings, ideologies, and influences that seek to shape our understanding of God and His purpose for our lives. The Apostle John urges us to exercise discernment, reminding us that not every voice we hear is aligned with the truth of God’s Word.

“Testing the spirits” is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is a heartfelt commitment to seek God’s truth amid uncertainty. It involves prayer, reflection, and a deep reliance on the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 16:13). When we encounter new ideas or teachings, we should ask ourselves: Does this align with the message of Jesus? Does it lead me closer to a relationship with Him?

As we engage with different spirits—whether through conversations, media, or teachings—we must also look inward. Are we open to the leading of the Holy Spirit? Are we grounded in Scripture, allowing it to be our measuring stick for truth?

Take a moment to quiet your heart and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in areas where you may need clarity. Reflect on any teachings or influences you’ve encountered recently and consider how they align with your understanding of Christ.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit, who guides and teaches us. Help us to be discerning as we navigate the many voices in our world. May we always seek to test the spirits against Your Word and the truth of Jesus Christ. Grant us wisdom and clarity, and may our hearts remain steadfast in our commitment to follow You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
